The Music That Made is a documentary series, which I both wrote and presented from 2012 – 2013. It originally aired on Brayford Radio the student radio station for the University of Lincoln, which I was also involved in founding and co-managing during the final two years of my undergraduate degree.
The premise of The Music That Made was simple, over a series of two weeks and two one-hour shows, I delved into the background and career of a different, iconic artist from the world of popular music. The programme focused on the artist’s early career, their influences and then moved on to cover the artists they themselves had influenced. In this way, I was able to get a rounded view of each artists career and play lots of their music, and music from artists associated with their careers.
With The Music That Made, I had a huge personal opportunity to delve into the careers of artists I’d grown up admiring, from Cat Stevens to Marc Cohn, Frank Turner and Taylor Swift. I also took inspiration from those around me on Brayford Radio and asking for suggestions of artists to cover and, at times, having guest presenters join me in the studio to talk about why they felt their chosen artist had had such an impact.
The approach and format of this programme were simple, and yet it was one of my favourites to write and present. I think there’s something so interesting about delving into the life and career of an artist and finding out what made them who they are today. I definitely think it’s a format that has legs in a number of different mediums. Maybe one day I’ll get to resurrect The Music That Made on a bigger radio station or even on TV, interviewing the artists themselves to add that final missing piece to what I think is a really interesting and entertaining programme idea.
